The York Ebor Festival, scheduled for August 20 -23 2025, stands as one of British horse racing's most prestigious events. This historic meeting, dating back to 1843, combines centuries of tradition with modern racing excellence at York's celebrated Knavesmire track.

Note: As the 2025 festival approaches, final entries and running plans will become clearer, but this preview reflects the current expectations and historical context of this prestigious meeting.

Some horses that competed successfully in the 2024 renewal could well be back for more in 2025. Let's take a quick look at some of the main races.

The Juddmonte International (Group 1) was won by the brilliant City Of Troy 5/4 who has now retired to stud but the runner up that day was Calandagan who had won 2 Group  3's and a Group 2 in his previous races. He then followed that effort with a runner up spot when a 6/4 favourite in the Qipco Champion Stakes Group 1.

The Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1) - Aidan O'Brien's Content 3/1 came out on top but hasn't achieved much in his 4 subsequent races so I doubt if we witness a similar outcome to this race in 2025.

The Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1)  Jockey Hollie Doyle aboard Archie Watson's Bradsell 3/1 produced a fine ride to take this race woorth £283,550. The pair followed that with another Group 1 win at the Curragh the following month although it now appears the horse has been retired to stud.

The Sky Bet Ebor Handicap Class 2 was won by Shadow Dancer 6/1, trained by Roger Varian, beating Lieber Power by a neck. He contested only one further race that year and it remains to be seen what sort of form he may bring to the 2025 race.

Historical Background

The festival takes its name from Eboracum, the Roman name for York, and began with the running of the Ebor Handicap, which remains Europe's richest flat handicap race. The meeting has evolved from a single race to a four-day spectacular featuring multiple Group 1 contests.

John Carr, York's first official clerk of the course, helped establish the festival's foundations in the 1840s. "The Ebor meeting was conceived to rival Ascot and Goodwood," noted racing historian John Randall. "It quickly became the highlight of the northern racing calendar."

Notable Races and Champions

The festival's flagship races include:

- The Juddmonte International (Group 1)

- The Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1)

Ryan Moore:Is the current leading festival jockey and 2024 won the Juddmonte International Stakes for the third time as City Of Troy destroyed the opposition with a dazzling display.

His exceptional riding skills and strategic race management are literally second to none.

"He's an exceptional two-year-old and had one bad day," Moore told ITV Racing.

"We let the horse did the talking and he's gone and done it again. He got away well and I didn't want to take him back. I just let him use his rhythm and he travelled beautifully the whole way."
