Horseracing news - Hennessy Gold Cup 2012

The weights have been published for the hugely competitive Grade 3 Hennessy Gold Cup Handicap Chase scheduled for Newbury on December 1st with the smart pair of Tidal Bay and Burton Port being allotted the highest burdens of 11st 12lbs.

A total of 52 entries have been received for the three-and-a-quarter-mile contest that was won amidst such emotional scenes 12 months ago when the late Lord Oaksey's home bred

Carruthers provided his son-in-law Mark Bradstock with his biggest ever winner as a trainer.

Carruthers, always popular with punters in the bet365 racing online markets, may well take his chance again after being allotted just a 1lb higher mark, but he blotted his copybook at Cheltenham recently when left at the start on his seasonal reappearance under regular partner Mattie Bachelor and has something to prove.

Both Burton Port and Tidal Bay are also engaged in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park the previous Saturday so there is some doubt about their participation, but the latest horseracing news is that it seems likely that two of last season's leading staying novice chasers Bob's Worth and Grand Crus could well head to the Berkshire track as they attempt to climb another rung up the ladder.

Bob's Worth proved too good for the hot favourite Grand Crus, (who eventually finished fourth), in the Grade 1 RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, having finished third to his old rival in the Grade 1 Feltham Novices Chase at Kempton's Boxing Day fixture.

The handicapper has allocated 11st 6lbs to Nicky Henderson's exciting prospect but 3lbs less to Grand Crus, and both figure amongst the market for the historic Newbury race.

Ireland's First Lieutenant, beaten two-and-a-half lengths by Bob's Worth at Cheltenham, is set to receive just 1lb from his conqueror of last season, whilst a horse who has been attracting support in the ante-post market for the big race after showing bags of promise last term is Alan King's Hold On Julio, the former point-to-pointer who landed his first two starts under rules at Sandown before failing to show his form at Cheltenham.

He has already had the one start this term and appeared back on track in finishing a close third to Balthazar King at the Prestbury track last month. Handed an eyecatching racing weight of just 10st 6lbs, Hold On Julio has been nicely supported down to a top price of 10/1.

Bob's Worth heads the current Hennessy Gold Cup ante-post market at 5/1, while recent Wincanton scorer The Package is a 9/1 chance along with Grand Crus. Other interesting contenders include First Lieutenant (12/1), Michel Le Bon (14/1), with Tidal bay and Harry The Viking amongst a group of smart performers currently available at up to 16/1.

Elsewhere in the racing news, the odds for the King George VI chase 2012 betting are really starting to hot up with operators such as bet365, so don't leave it too late to place your bet for the big one!
