Australian Horse Racing Calendar: The Big Races and Carnivals Through the Year

Australia's racing year at a glance

Australians don't really do festivals; they do carnivals. A carnival is a run of big race days over several weeks, usually built around a handful of Group 1 races and a lot of fashion, food and betting. The year has a few, and between them they cover most of the calendar.

The two that matter most are the Sydney Autumn Carnival in March and April, and the Spring Carnival in September, October and November, which builds through Sydney and Melbourne to the Melbourne Cup. If you only have time for one, make it the Cup.

The seasons are also flipped from Britain and Ireland. Summer is in January, so the year opens with racing in the sun on the Gold Coast, and the Melbourne Cup lands in early spring, just as the British Flat season is winding down.

Key 2027 dates for the major carnivals

These are the dates published so far. Some of the big October races haven't been confirmed yet, so check the racing club websites before you book anything.

January: the Magic Millions

The racing year opens on the Gold Coast with the Magic Millions Carnival, a two-week event built around the Magic Millions yearling sales. The big race day is the Magic Millions Classic, a very rich race for horses bought at the sales, run over 1,200 metres. Horses that do well here often go on to the Golden Slipper.

February: Super Saturday

The action moves south in February. At Flemington in Melbourne, the big meeting of the month features the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.

A top sprint and the Australian Guineas, a mile race for three-year-olds. Meanwhile, the Sydney Autumn Carnival is already starting to build.

March and April: the Sydney Autumn Carnival

Six weeks of racing at Randwick and Rosehill, and the best of the Australian racing year outside the spring.

  • Golden Slipper (Rosehill, Saturday 20 March 2027): the richest race in the world for two-year-olds, a Group 1 worth A$5 million over 1,200 metres. Winning it makes a colt a more valuable stallion prospect.
  • Doncaster Mile (Randwick): the top handicap mile of the carnival.
  • Australian Derby (Randwick, early April): the Classic for three-year-olds over 2,400 metres.
  • Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Randwick, expected Saturday 10 April 2027): the biggest weight-for-age race of the autumn, worth A$4 million over 2,000 metres.
  • Sydney Cup (Randwick): a long-distance handicap over 3,200 metres, and a good test of stamina.

May and June: the Brisbane Winter Carnival

The Brisbane Winter Carnival, held at Eagle Farm and Doomben, is the highlight of the Queensland racing year. Its best-known races include the Doomben 10,000 in May, and the Stradbroke Handicap and Queensland Derby in June.

September and October: the Spring Carnival

The Spring Carnival is the longest and most varied of the year. It starts in September and runs through to the first week of November, with Sydney and Melbourne both putting on a series of big race days.

  • The Everest (Randwick, mid-October): the richest turf race in the world, worth A$20 million over a short 1,200 metres. It's invitation-only, with slot holders picking the field.
  • Caulfield Cup (Caulfield, October): a famous handicap over 2,400 metres, and a traditional first step towards the Melbourne Cup.
  • Cox Plate (late October): the weight-for-age championship of Australia, run over 2,040 metres and often called the best race in the country. Moonee Valley is being redeveloped, and the 2026 running was held at Flemington. Check the venue for 2027.

November: the Melbourne Cup Carnival

Four days at Flemington, and the biggest racing occasion in the Australian Horse Racing Calendar. In 2027 the Cup is on Tuesday 2 November.

  • Victoria Derby Day (Saturday before the Cup): the Classic for three-year-olds over 2,500 metres.
  • Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday): the main event, a 3,200 metre handicap known as "the race that stops a nation". It's a public holiday in Melbourne, and it's run at around 3pm local time, which is an early start of about 4am in the UK.
  • Oaks Day (Thursday): the big day for fashion, and a top race for fillies and mares.
  • Stakes Day (Saturday): a final day of Group 1 racing to close the carnival.

December: summer racing

After the Cup the carnival season quietens down. Perth's summer carnival runs from November into December, and the Christmas and New Year fixtures keep racing going before the Magic Millions starts the cycle again.
