Racing Stable Daily Life Stories In March as we continue our journey through the seasons.
No apologies - I decided I just had to backtrack and take in the fact that the yard has won five races over seven days! We've topped £100k in jumps prize money this season with eight weeks still to go, and a total of eleven wins under our belt. All credit to the team here - Jamie, Josh, Amanda, Jenna, young Codey, and our brilliant part-time staff.
But none of this would work without the overwhelming support of you, our owners. From four horses nine years ago and two owners (one being Frank!) to what we are today - thank you all.
It's wonderful to see Samantha with her three winners over the week, having joined our racing club just two years ago after being nudged by supporters Ian and Gareth. The Nelson partnership finally got there with Blame Rose - I swear Julia was nearly smiling, and so she should with both Beaumesnil and Blame Rose coming through!
Stuart and Steve are still on cloud nine with Pinot winning the Listed mares race at Doncaster. This is Stuart's first horse, along with his share in Champ Royal - now that's what I call a lucky owner!
Obviously there are no mirrors on horses, because our jockeys certainly failed to look in them to see how far ahead they were winning by!
Nathan won by eighteen lengths on Velasco, Sam by nineteen lengths on Champ Royal for the Northern Racing Club, and then Nathan again on Blame Rose by a mere fifteen lengths.
Her wind operation certainly worked, and it was a wonder Adam didn't overbalance with all the cash in his pockets! Edward had the harder job, winning by just half a length on Pinot.
It was also Edward Austin's first Listed win, which is just what he needs to put him on the map. Our three jockeys all come in and ride out, and it was brilliant to see they all had winners and shared in our success!
The horses that didn't win, like Buddy in fourth, did nothing wrong. Charizard has just started his career, Kingston Rock improved his jumping tremendously, and Dandycan will improve for his run.
As if that wasn't enough excitement for one week, Morning with Ivan popped out her first filly foal at 11:30 last night! She's by Kingston Hill, whose stud fee has gone up to £3k this year.
The aim is to breed our own future racehorses to compete with trainers with mega millions...
Kelso Sunday 10th March - Les Legacy, who's in good order, and Velasco goes again quickly to try and beat his new handicap mark
Newcastle 12th March - Flat racing begins! Kaidu, a new horse for Daryl Clarke and the Girsonfield Racing Club
Newcastle 13th March - Infinite Honour's first run of the season
Hexham 14th March - Rock Steady Eddie for the GRC, This is Bob, and Atomic Angel - please rain!
Newcastle 16th March - Johnny Dogs goes over two miles...
But will our incredible run continue? Can Velasco handle his new handicap mark? And what challenges await as we juggle both Flat and National Hunt horses? With a newborn foal in the mix and the Go North Series finals approaching, March is shaping up to be our biggest test yet!
That's all for this week!
Great run from Rocky at Hexham this week! Kaidu is sorted now and has an entry at Newcastle on Friday - though I need to see if he's fit enough this week as he had a week off. I'll let you all know soon.
But here's the big news - we've achieved our target for the season and beaten our best ever year!
2017 (jumps only): £104k from 148 runs with 13 wins and 58 places
2024: £108k from 92 runs with 11 wins and 37 places
Long may it continue with your support! The efficiency speaks for itself - fewer runs, better results.
The rest of the week has been quite something. We hope to have found good homes for our retirees Gowanbuster and Ask My Heather. After being reschooled by Jamie and Josh, they behaved very well indeed - it's always emotional but wonderful when they find the right retirement homes.
Next up we went to Newcastle where Infinite Honour defied his 150/1 odds to finish fifth and beat some good horses. He needs further but we'll stick to a mile on the turf as the ground is still so soft.
Then we were off to Hexham with three runners. First up was Rock Steady Eddie for the Girsonfield Racing Club, having his third run for his handicap mark. We hoped he'd be in the places but never expected he'd be so close - second to the Nicky Richards horse rated 116! He nearly won, and watching the head-on replay much later, he was robbed as the other horse crossed his path at least twice!
Then it was Atomic Angel's turn. She finished third and made a good account of herself - would have been better if it had been a faster pace, but she'll go again soon. This Is Bob was joint favorite and came third - he's still learning, or maybe we're still learning what he's good at!
Saturday was manic with foal watch in full swing. Bahrikate was overdue, so after Josh and I took turns staying up nights, she finally popped her daughter out at 10:30 AM! All the staff were able to watch as most had never seen a mare foal. Bahrikate isn't brilliant at it, but Josh was on hand to help her.
Johnny Dogs came up with a fat joint so missed Newcastle, but Les's Legacy, ridden by Edward Austin, gave his best performance of the season to finish second to a horse carrying 19lb less in ground he wouldn't love.
Today we had the AGM for the Nelson Racing Partnership, who had something to celebrate with Blame Rose's fifteen-length victory the week before. Their fillies are growing and will both be broken in this summer, then turned away to mature.
The mare Ebony Rose should foal in the next four weeks to Schiaparelli again - I've ordered a colt this time, though I don't mind fillies as they're registered for the British Bred fillies £20k bonuses!
The staff had a brilliant week with happy owners bearing gifts! We've also had lots of publicity, from Ireland to the Hexham Courant, with a particularly good piece in the Racing Post courtesy of Steve H! Our jockeys this season have done us proud - Sam, Nathan, and Edward all winning. Still six weeks to go!
Next week:
We'll soon be at the finals on April 5th, 6th, and 7th where I hope to have a few runners, so we may be quiet before then...
But will Kaidu be ready for Friday? Can we maintain this incredible form heading into the finals? And what surprises does foaling season have in store for us?
With more mares due and the biggest races of our season approaching, the next few weeks could make or break our record year!
So it's been a busy week, mainly getting horses ready for the big finals weekend at Musselburgh and Kelso. I've been trying to avoid clashes of horses, but that plan is absolutely not working! I hate having two horses in the same race because someone will be disappointed before we even start. However, sometimes it just can't be avoided.
The filly foals are doing brilliantly while we wait for the final foal to arrive out of Ebony Rose for the Nelson Partnership. Our yard sponsor, Finnies Heavy Haulage, are sponsoring us again this year, which is such a help to the yard - money well spent on improvements, probably more gallop fiber this year. I did hear at Carlisle yesterday that our recent success was due to our new gallops... not sure where I've hidden those!
Just Oot, the four-year-old belonging to head lad Josh, had his second trip out in a bumper. Not brilliant, but he hated the ground and needs to fill out, so he gets a long break to grow now. All good education though. Rock Steady Eddie went to Haydock and the ground dried out against us, but he ran on to be sixth - all education again.
Meanwhile, up at Carlisle, Charizard (a 'fill in' horse) ran in his first hurdle race and jumped really well - just caught out on the hill. He was fourth at 200/1! Sam rode him and had to eat his words after Charizard's first bumper (I won't say what they were!).
The team were very happy with Easter gifts from owners - no days off though! They've had a hard shift this winter with driving rain. Although how much overweight they'll be after chocolates, pies, and biscuits, I don't know!
So will this be the most exciting week ahead so far?
Tomorrow: Infinite Honour at Redcar over the longer trip of a mile - should suit...
Wednesday: Dandycan needs to show he can indeed at Catterick
Friday Musselburgh Runners:
Saturday Kelso Runners:
I feel tired but very excited just thinking about it! Oh yes, and then the following week it's Aintree and Redcar with Pinot Rouge and Clear Angel.
This could be the week that defines our entire season. With stable favorites going head-to-head and championship titles on the line, will our horses rise to the occasion?
Can we handle the pressure of having multiple runners in the same races? And most importantly - will Velasco and Champ Royal's clash live up to the hype?
The biggest weekend of our year is almost here, and my nerves are already jangling!
