Racing Stable Daily Life Stories In February - When Everything Clicks Into Place

Northern Racing ClubNorthern Racing Club

You know those weeks when you wonder if you've been doing something right all along? Well, this has been one of those weeks - even the horse we thought might have to retire has put his best foot forward!

Starting at Newcastle, Kingston Rock went brilliantly, being educated all the way round. A slip-up at the last didn't help his cause and he finished fifth, but there's plenty of promise there for the future. This Is Bob made a juddering error but still finished the race, which gives us real hope as he gets more experience under his belt.

But it was Pinot Rouge who really caught my eye. We bought her privately from Ireland, and she went on to be very impressive on her first run, which was also her first time over hurdles. Another few yards and her third would have been first against some very good horses. She's now heading for the Doncaster Listed mares race in four weeks - the quality of the yard is growing, which is exactly what we're aiming for.

And Buddy - for the first time ever, the commentator got his name right! He was like a different horse entirely. After a few gasps and a brilliant ride by Nathan, he came second. I was holding my breath the whole way.

Wetherby looked like it might be the dampener with Rock Steady Eddie - best known for how he uses his teeth - looking lacklustre as he trudged around at the back. Edward was intent on improving him and took him at a steady pace. Then off they went and steamed in to finish third, with the odd 100K horse behind him!

What a week - thanks to the team and our owners who work and have the patience to make these moments worthwhile. While Sam Coltherd waited out his ban, Ed Austin and Nathan filled the gap brilliantly. Ed is very good value for his claim and has done nothing wrong this week - he just needs the chances.

So what now? Les's Legacy at Musselburgh in about an hour! Best get on...

This week we've got Sedgefield with Velasco and Atomic Angel, Newcastle on the 8th with Royal Prospect, and Newcastle on the 10th with a new horse to us - Kaidu.

Fingers crossed the horses just keep getting better - but will our luck hold? And what exactly happened with that horse we thought might retire? Read on to find out...

Racing Stable Daily Life Stories In February 2024 - Seven Runners and Sweet Redemption

Newsletter late again - tut tut! But I've got good reason this time - we've been absolutely flying!

First of all, we've had a brilliant start to February with seven runners producing two firsts, two seconds, a third, and two that could have been better. Royal Prospect's run at Newcastle was actually one of his best performances in a much better race, so we're thrilled with that. Huge congratulations to the team for keeping these horses fit through rain, wind, and absolutely freezing conditions - they've been heroes!

Now, here's a story about patience paying off. Velasco disappointed us for long enough that most of his owners backed out. I don't blame them - it's heartbreaking when a horse doesn't fire. But Samantha wasn't deterred, and her patience has been rewarded yet again! Nathan Moscrop gave him a great front-running ride over the shorter distance, and suddenly everything clicked into place. Sometimes you just have to believe.

The rest of the yard continue building to fitness or working towards their next races. The horses on the sick list are back in work, including Theatre Light, which is wonderful news. We have no runners this week apart from Wotyoudunnow Buddy at Musselburgh - yes, that's really his name! - but we'll have quite a few lined up for the mid to late February slot. Kingston Rock heads to Carlisle on Monday.

Our Flat youngsters have come to fitness very quickly, but we're waiting for the turf to firm up. The exception is our newbie Kaidu, bought from Tatts and running for Castle View and Girsonfield Racing Club. He runs on the 22nd February - last time out he was third, ridden by Holly Doyle, so we're hopeful.

Racing Stable Daily Life Stories In February: Racing Ahead

  • 18th Musselburgh - Buddy
  • 19th Carlisle - Kingston Rock
  • 22nd Newcastle - Kaidu, first ride for us...

And we can now reveal the mystery! The horse we thought about retiring is Buster, and Faye is hoping to take him for his well-earned retirement. But will Buster get one last hurrah before he hangs up his racing shoes? And how will our newcomer Kaidu fare in his debut for us?

What a February it's been! About 90% of our runners have hit prize money - woo! We even got a mention on Irish TV this week, all to do with Pinot Rouge's third in a novice. Sometimes I have to pinch myself!

This has been a week of real achievements. Both Kingston Rock and This Is Bob managed seconds, and I couldn't be prouder. KR - or Paddy as we call him - did absolutely nothing wrong and has put off his chasing career because it certainly looks like he'll win over hurdles first.

As for Bob, well, his syndicate have waited and waited, but he's finally come good! Just beaten with Charlotte Jones riding, though the race was very short for him. We'll look again over two miles four furlongs.

The horses qualified for the finals in April are building up nicely, and it's likely I may have more than one entry in some races - which I absolutely hate, but second and third prizes are still very good money! February has been an excellent month for racing, and it's not finished yet with Beaumesnil heading for Wetherby on Thursday.

March looks to be no less exciting, with the early weeks packed full of runners. Jimmybegood for the Naughty but Nice Syndicate heads for Newcastle for his debut - both for the group and for him!

They deserve success because he hasn't been easy, but we're ready to start. He did his stalls trial last week and... well, let's just say it was eventful! He shied at the wings, stood on his own foot, pulled the shoe off, nearly threw Jamie off, and then went on to complete his stalls test perfectly! That's Jimmy for you.

Dandycan, who only had one race last year, also goes to Newcastle in the race after Jimmy. He's strengthened up a lot, and I expect both him and Jimmy to make a good account of themselves.

Then it's off to Doncaster with Pinot Rouge for Stuart and Steve - big race, a Listed mares. Velasco may go to Doncaster on Sunday too, which would be a good race for him.

So here's what's coming up:

  • 29th Feb: Beaumesnil at Wetherby
  • 1st March: Jimmybegood and Dandycan
  • 2nd March: Pinot Rouge at Doncaster
  • 3rd March: Velasco at Doncaster
  • 5th: Newcastle, maybe Buddy and Charizard - a new horse for the Goodfellow Partnership
  • 6th: Catterick, maybe Champ, Buddy and Velasco - all maybes!
  • 7th: Blame Rose at Carlisle
  • 8th: Ayr with Kingston Rock and Theatre Light
  • 10th: Kelso with Les Legacy and maybe Champ
  • 12th: Newcastle with new boy Kaidu for the GRClub

It's an absolutely mad schedule, but that's exactly how I like it! The question is - will Jimmybegood's stalls antics be a sign of things to come, or was that just him getting his nerves out? And can Pinot Rouge handle the step up to Listed company?

All will be revealed in the coming weeks!
