Grey horses in Kentucky Derby

This year there are 4 grey horses in the starting gate for Kentucky Derby 2016. What is the highest number of greys to run in a Kentucky Derby?

Answer: I don't think there is a record. Finding the results charts on line can be difficult too.

They used to be available through the KY Derby website, but no longer. Perhaps someone at the KY Derby Museum or the KY Derby marketing Dept. or even the Keeneland Library would have the info.

The greys running in 2022 are

White Abarrio rg - rose grey

Barber Road rg - rose grey

The greys running in 2021 are Essential Quality and Soup And Sandwich

The greys running in 2016 are Mohaymen, Creator, Lani, and Destin

There have been 8 gray KY Derby winners, if that helps.

I thought it was an interesting question, since so many grays are entered to run this year. With Tapit being such a prominent sire, I expect we'll be seeing a resurgence of greys in the next few years, at least here in the US.

In 2019 there were 3 grey horses in the starting gate for Kentucky Derby.

Tacitus finished 3/19

Roadster 15/19

Gray Magician 19/19

The race was controversial in that the first horse home Maximum Security was demoted to 17/19 due to interference on the final bend.
