A Placepot - how it is treated with a non runner

by D Connor

My horse was withdrawn from the race the horse eventually got out the stall and finished 3rd but the head steward says if the horse had won the race or2nd it wouldn’t count because it was a non runner so what happens to my bet am I on the 2nd best if not my bet

Answer: If your horse was officially declared a **non-runner before the race**, then your bet is normally treated as **void** — even if the horse later got loose, ran the course, and crossed the line.

The steward is basically saying the horse was **not an official participant** in the race result. So:

* If you backed that horse **win only** → your stake should be refunded.
* If you backed it **each-way** → both parts are usually void/refunded.
* You do **not** automatically get paid on the “2nd best” horse unless your bookmaker specifically offers a special concession (most don’t in this situation).

The finishing position of the loose horse doesn’t count for betting purposes because the horse had already been withdrawn from the official race before the start.

If you want, tell me:

* which bookmaker it was, and
* whether it was a win or each-way bet,

and I can explain exactly how they’ll usually settle it.
