Market Movers Section On The Attheraces Website

by Eric

HELLO. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME THE BEST WAY TO USE THE MARKET MOVERS, ON THE ATR SITE.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE ATR INDEX. KIND REGARDS ERIC

Answer: The Market Movers section on the ATR site lists horses that are being heavily backed (steamers) or losing support (drifters) along with price movements for every race. This can be helpful for spotting potential betting opportunities.

The ATR Index is influenced by a range of factors including the market share of the horse, the change in the market share and how many fixed odds bookmakers offer that price. The higher the Index figure the greater the confidence ATR has in their data.

Take for example ATR’s Top Ten list of Steamers for 21 March 2024

At the top is Prince Abu racing at Southwell 20.30
His price has dropped from 8/1 First Show to 4/1 Last Price - this suggests that punters are confident of his chances of winning

In the same race this also applies to the mount of Holly Doyle, Stolen Encounter which has moved from 7/1 to 5/1.

Thus the list of Steamers will help a punter decide whether to back a particular horse based on its support in the market

Now with regard to ATR’s Top Ten list of Drifters on the same day this list shows horses that are losing support in the market as punters are less convinced of their chances of winning.

This will help punters who are looking for horses to lay (back to lose) .

You won’t want to be laying those with big prices so if we look at the first on the list we have Before Midnight in the 17.20 at Ludlow whose price at First Show was 5/4 and has drifted out to 2/1 which represents a move out of 60%.

There are 2 other drifters below 3/1 but their drift is roughly half that of Before Midnight. This suggests that Before Midnight would make a good lay proposition.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

The "last price" shown is before the race goes live, so odds may fluctuate.

Non-runners can affect the odds for other horses.

The bookmaker offering the best price is listed, but the actual odds may vary.
