The better class maidens come out at Newmarket on Friday where the pick of our representatives appears to be Havant (Won SP 7-4) in Division 2 of the European Breeders Fund Maiden Filles Stakes (2.20). Sir Michael Stoute's filly has been doing some decent work on the Limekilns of late and is expected to strike first time. Call To Reason (Won SP 4-6) can strike in the one mile maiden (4.35) for Jeremy Noseda.Off for nearly a year since finishing second on her sole start on the Rowley Mile, the daughter of Pivotal should like the likely soft ground and is super fit. Over at Ffos Las on the same day, Dave Simcock is expected to rack up another winner in the Fillies Maiden (3.05). The three-year old, Shamardal Phantom, (non runner) wasn't disgraced when chasing home the talented Fork Lightning at Epsom last time and Simcock's team remain in super form. Over in Ireland on Sunday, the weekends best bet turns out at the Curragh (3.15) in the shape of Aviate (non runner) in the Group 3 Dance Design Stakes. Henry Cecil's filly got a little jarred up when only seventh in the Oaks last time but looked as good as ever in some work on Tuesday morning. On Bank Holiday Monday at Ripon, The Paddyman (non runner) is expected to land some black type by lifting the Listed Two Year Old Champion Trophy (3.35). Runner up in Group comapny at Goodwood last time, William Haggas' speedster looked to have improved in his work on the Limekilns last week. At Bath on the same day, Magic Cross (unplaced) can supplement his recent course victory in the Lancer Scott Retail Nursery (2.40) (actually ran at Warwick 5.05), Charlie McBride was pleased with his sprinter in a piece of work on Wednesday and thinks he could still be a step ahead of the handicapper. We have plenty of chances at York this week but our bests bets on Wednesday appear to lie elsewhere. Down on the Kent coast at Folkestone, Peter Chapple-Hyam unleashes one of his better juveniles in the shape of Cloud Rock (Won SP 5-6) in the opening Adamson's Laboratory Services Maiden Auction Stakes (5.30). A little later on the same card take no notice of the former figures of Isobar (2nd) (7.30) who has been working well for Luca Cumani ahead of the RSA Enviromental Health Handicap.Owned by Mr Marinopolous, Isobar has a look of the same owners Presvis about him.The latter rose from the handicap ranks to land Group 1 races abroad in 2008/9 and, although not in that league, Isobar may have a few nice races in him. Up at Carlisle earlier the same day, Candy's Girl (2nd) should get off the mark second time around in the pes-security.com EBF Median Auction Maiden Stakes(1.30). Michael Bell's youngster was out of her depth in a good race at Ascot on her debut but has since worked nicely with Biaraafa who won a similiar event at Yarmouth earlier this week. At York, King of Wands (3rd) should go well at a price in the Group 2 Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup (2.15). John Gosden's stayer wasn't stopping when landing a Listed event at Sandown last time and has been in fair nick at home since then. Midday (Won SP 11-4) is only a token selection in a fascinating renewal of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on the Knavesmire on Thursday (3.25). Best bet on Friday at the same venue looks to be Star of Dance (3rd) in the Convivial Maiden Stakes (4.05). Sir Michael Stoute has yet to get going with his youngsters but the son of Danehill Dancer worked nicely on Tuesday. On Saturday at Sandown its all about Seta (Won SP 11-4) in the Listed Atalanta Stakes (2.05). Luca Cumani pulled his star filly out of a similar engagement at Bath last week and is expected to give Jean-Pierre Guillambert the chance to shine in the saddle as stable jockey Kieren Fallon will be in Chicago for the Arlington Million where his mount Summit Surge is sure to go close. The two-year old division are keeping Saeed bin Suroor's team at Godolphin Stables on a roll at present and they look to introduce two decent newcomers at Newmarket and Nottingham on Friday. First up Frankie Dettori partners the Street Cry colt Saamidd (Won SP 11-4) at the first at Newbury (1.30) and this classy sort has been showing plenty in his homework on Chippenham Hill. The latest racing news is the appearance of the Invincible Spirit colt My Freedom (Won SP 7-4) in the (2.20) at Nottingham who will be ridden by Ted Durcan and looks one to catch first time. Bin Suroor should also be on the mark down at Kempton on the same evening where Ragsah (Won SP 4-9) can make it third time lucky in the EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes (8.20). Ragsah will be a valuable commodity if she wins a race as she is a half sister to none other than the mighty Dubai Millennium, who was by far the best racehorse I have ever witnessed on the local gallops in 20 years. Best bet on Saturday looks to be Sharnberry (Won SP 4-5) in the 6.30 Lingfield. Ed Dunlop's two year olds are on fire at present and Sharnberry (who was mentioned here each-way) finished third on her debut at Goodwood last month and has thrived since. Dunlop also fires a live bullet in the shape of Native Khan (Non Runner - won rescheduled race at SP 6-5) who is expected to maintain his unbeaten record in the Listed Matalan Stakes (2.00) at Newbury the same day. Tipped up here when landing odds of 14-1 on his debut at Newmarket's July meeting, the son of Azamour has showed that was no fluke when scooting clear of some decent lead horses at home of late. Best bet on Sunday is the hat trick seeking Seta (Non Runner - won rescheduled race at SP 11-4) in the Listed Dick Hern Fillies Stakes at Bath (4.00). Luca Cumani's filly is really starting to blossom of late and can take this before reverting to Group company. Racing News from David Milnes

Henry Cecil had another lucrative time of it last weekend and heads north on Thursday in search of another winner in the shape of Nordic Spruce (Non Runner) at Haydock (2.40). This youngster was given a lovely ride to score on her debut at Nottingham and looked the business when I caught up with her on the Al Bahathri at second lot last Friday. Later on the same card, Right Grand (Lost)(3.40) is classy enough to land this on his way to better things. Best bet down at Yarmouth in the afternoon is last weeks winner Sooraah (2nd)(3.50) who did us a favour at Sandown and can follow up under a penalty. At Sandown in the evening, Johnny Castle (2nd)(6.45) can provide John Gosden with a welcome juvenile winner in the one mile Brothers Pear Cider EBF Maiden Stakes. This son of Shamardal caught the eye when runner up here a fortnight ago and has come on a ton since. At the Shergar Cup fixture on Saturday at Ascot, Gramercy (Won at SP 4-1)appears our best bet in the closing Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (5.05). A winner at Haydock last time,Gramercy very much caught the eye in his latest spin on the Watered gallop at the weekend. At Newmarket, Khor Sheed and Clinical look difficult to split in the featured Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes (2.35). Khor Sheed won a Listed event here last time and has thrived since whilst Clinical did us a favour when scoring at Doncaster first time.

David's Question And Answer Corner
Question: To what extent does discussions with a trainer and watching the horse on the gallops influence tips selection (if at all)? David Milnes Answer: I would say that it’s around 50% what you see and hear and the other 50% is what’s in the formbook. With an unraced horse this obviously goes up to about an 80/20 ratio which is crucial but some trainers aren't that bothered about winning with debutants, as they like to give them experience. Also you can factor in that if a horse wins first time out there aren't the number of conditions races to cater for them in the programme book as there used to be. In that case they have to step up to Listed class or above which many find beyond them at this early stage of their careers.
