The Nicky
Henderson-trained Bobs Worth is the top three-mile chaser in the business even though he has
had only two races in senior company over fences.
The lightly-raced star will surely prove difficult to beat back at the Cheltenham Festival in March when he will attempt to defend his Gold Cup crown.
Henderson has an embarrassment of riches in the chasing department with former Gold Cup winner, Long Run, flying grey, Simonsig, and superstar, Sprinter Sacre, all housed at his Seven Barrows yard.
Nick Henderson's charge, however, improved in leaps and bounds last term, and having ended the previous campaign with victory in the Grade 1 RSA Chase at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival, he began last term in tremendous fashion by landing a gamble in beating the admirable veteran Tidal Bay in a fine renewal of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on December 1.
Raised 11lbs for that win to a mark of 171, he was not seen again until lining up for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup in March for which he was a popular 11/4 favourite with the horse racing at Betfair.
All was going to plan until Barry Geraghty’s mount was hampered by the fall of Silviniaco Conti at the third last, but he was soon back on an even keel and came through powerfully on the uphill run to the final fence to catch stable companion, Long Run, and the gallant Irish raider, Sir Des Champs, eventually pulling clear to score by an impressive seven lengths.
Decent ground is generally considered preferable for this fine chaser to be seen at his best so his 2013/14 campaign will surely be dictated by the state of the ground. Henderson’s star remains a rock solid 3/1 ante-post favourite to retain his Gold Cup title.
