Hi

Susan Corbett's Newsletter

I am getting a good start today as I have Nichola and Natasha doing Sunday stables and then I am off to Sedgefield with Ivans Legacy for his second run in a Bumper.....

This week the winter preparations started in earnest with new rugs arriving and horses getting clipped. We do need to clip them as when their winter coats grow in they get hot and sweaty after work. I finally found new retirement homes for Li Shang and Samwise where they will be well looked after in their life after racing. Meanwhile Jamie is breaking in 'Chester' a new, very nervous 4 year old by Ocovango - very much work in progress.

On Wednesday we went to Newcastle racecourse at 7am to take our new horses Ratemenow and Mr Ramoon - Mr R is a difficult teenager while Ratemenow is very calm - both have ran in Point to Points in Ireland and are due out 30th October at Newcastle. When I first started this training business Trainers seemed not to talk to their peers - now things are changing and Rebbecca allows us to school our babies at her yard, to get them used to different jumps and locations.

She also let our babies slot in behind two of hers at the Newcastle gallop. One of hers was ridden by Nathan ( who we also share ! ) - my two did get beaten by Rebeccas but I was happy when I found out one had won 2 bumpers and the other was rated 130 ( Cheltenham standard ). My two were very good, first time galloping there. Jamie rode Ratemenow and Bekah on her pride and joy Mr R who was very well behaved - Jamie and Bekah have put a lot of thought and work into Mr R to get him over his strange behaviour.

Talking of young horses, that brings us to Carlisle where Crimson Road ran a much better race but still failed to settle - they are not all straightforward and we have a quandry with him - but a lot of improvement was shown from his last hurdle race. Meanwhile the two in the bumper were brilliant - long odds and Knockranna Rose was 2nd only beaten ¾ Length while Red dart was a close 4th - very proud of them both.

We trained KR dam and Jamie was placed and won on her. When she retired, Rose and I sorted a covering by Cloudings for her and KR is the result. Rose kept him till he was 4 and then he came to us - so happy for Rose and 'The Ladies That Race' ( and some male hangers on lol ).

We have to say a word about Amanda here, as she rode him most of the time through his education and had that terrible fall from him and fractured her skull last November - being off many months. Due to her determination, she is not only back full time but riding KR ( Joker ) every day and loves him despite his quirks. Our Student Abi, has ridden Red Dart at home, who we ( Josh ) bought at the sales in July.

Abi made a great job of plaiting his mane and tail but was pipped to the Best Turned out prize by Josh - I do not think anyone else saw the chocolate that he won - scoffed on the way home no doubt! Red Dart is owned by Samantha and leased to the Nelson Racing Club, while they wait for their youngster to be ready next year.

He was very professional and ran a great race to be 4th. More young horses with an exciting future before them - Joker will now go Novice hurdling ( done his 3 bumpers ) while Red Dart will run in another bumper as Nathan is happy he will win one!.

Mike Darrah has decided we need to do some promotion of the yard and has undertaken to have our owners a choice of 'Susan Corbett Racing' jackets, Christmas Cards and our very own Calendars - we intend to put any profit to the Injured Jockeys fund - especially after seeing the Graham Lee program last week. Mike will be in touch with more detail - his email is Cestrialad@aol.com

Talking of accidents or near - it was amazing to see Dan Muscutt helping Callum Rodriguez back into the saddle in the middle of a Flat race ( see Racing TV ) - good people will out!

We have a new filly joined the yard owned by Ann and Allan Grant pictured below with their other 'hobby'. A warm welcome to them and to 'Stella' their 3 year old Dartmouth filly - she is just starting work and doing well so far - remembering Red Dart is also by Dartmouth. The Girsonfield Racing Club has its year end in October and we have a few people leaving us and a few people joining us - so only 1 share left ( £100.00 ) in Glorious Gloria! O Faolains Glory.

So to this week - Ivans Legacy has his 2nd run in a bumper - another home bred by Flag of Honour out of Morning with Ivan - ( Les's legacy little bro ). If he settles he should run a good race so fingers crossed for the Tweed Valley Racing Club.
