Hi

Susan Corbett's Newsletter and Tip

The week started with a different twist as I went off with Frank to the mart to buy a Tup ( male sheep ) he is a Texel and joins our other Tup as the ewes are preparing to meet their mates with a view to lambing in the Spring. Its not what you know... Jonny, who is in a few of our groups gave a hand to load the Tup and off we went home.

Next we went to Sedgefield and just as we arrived they changed the ground to good to firm - Dotties Promise is a big mare and she would not appreciate firm ground so we turned around and came home. Its very frustrating as well as incurring costs when that happens which is why I like Hexham where they always water to the easy side of good. We need rain now or small fields will continue - with frustration all around.

Horses started getting clipped this week and next week we start work on a couple of newcomers - a 3 year old filly belonging to new Owners to the yard Allan and Ann and a 4 year old gelding by Ocovango. They have had time to settle in and its all systems go from Monday.

The Girsonfield Racing Club starts its new year on the 1st Nov and we are sorry to see some members leave but new ones take their place - O Faolains Glory is a brilliant asset to their club as she always tries her best and was 2nd at Hexham only beaten 1 ¼ lengths while adding lengths onto her run by jumping right - so a right handed course next time like Carlisle or Musselburgh. Plenty of choices with her 2 - 2.4 hurdles or chases. She is a little superstar with the heart of a lion!

Pinot definitely needed more cut in the ground and was tired after her race - so she will improve for that run - she is the highest rated horse on the yard and has a tougher task than most. Freddie - hmm his 3rd run in a bumper and it was painful to watch as the other Jockeys had tried to out manoeuvre us.

The young claimer was told to go in front and go a good pace to unsettle ours if we had decided to go in front. The boy went a snails pace and Nathan decided to keep right out of the way and settle Freddie at the back. Apparently, the boy got a good telling off afterwards from Mr Scudamore which was harsh as he also lost his horse and there is a reason young jockeys claim 10lbs-

judging pace for a jockey is the hardest thing to learn. Anyway Freddie came like a train, got his head in front then was pipped by ½ length whilst carrying a minimum of 7lb more than the rest - just greenness and he will keep improving.

So a 2nd. 3rd and 4th at Hexham and work in progress. This week we go to Carlisle with Crimson Road - in the Novice - his jumping is amazing and hopefully we have the key to get him to settle over his hurdles.

Then Theatre Light who will wear a tongue tie as I think she has an issue with her wind - then what I really dislike - 2 in the same race. Red Dart has his debut for us after being placed twice in PTP bumpers and Knockeranna Rose ( Joker ) goes for his 3rd Bumper for practice before he goes hurdling over further. Ivans Legacy is out a few days later at Sedgefield - trying to fit our young horses into bumpers is a problem without having clashes.

Dates 16th October Carlisle - Crimson Road, Red Dart, Joker, Theatre Light 19th Sedgefield Ivans legacy 5th December - Christmas Dinner at Le Petit Chateau and our final raffle for Christmas - anyone else for tickets? onwards..... Susan
