Newsletter - Susan Corbett's Newsletter July 13, 2025 |
Hi Susan Corbett's Newsletter NB Susan and I are creating a series of articles describing a year in the life of her racing yard, which everyone will be able to follow. Watch out for the first in this fascinating look behind the scenes of a modern racing stable. Good morning - A beautiful one it is! This week has been full of busy, starting with Frank having an op to re-attach the muscle on his knee - we cannot fault the care from the NHS. As I waited to collect him after his op, I went to visit friends Karen ( Karen and I had a marketing company back in the day ) and Allen. I have to say I had a much more enjoyable day than Frank, which ended up with the heron visiting their garden in Amble as she and her mate have done every day for 20 years - incredible! Back home, the staff are riding 5 horses a day and then getting the stables all disinfected and painted ready for the season proper to begin. What happens if you leave Josh and a mell ( big Hammer ) for two days with a caravan? A piggery! At last we have got rid of the caravan, Josh gutted it and then he and the scrap man cut it into pieces and so it is no more... The boys, J and J then turned the area into a place for the pigs. Jamie has also been concentrating on building the roof trusses for the new roof on the cream barn - he is putting a steeper angle on the roof giving more space at the ends for Yorkshire boarding to be fitted for ventilation. I had to do an online module ( 3 actually ) last week as part of the new Trainer licence requirements - Safeguarding and Human Welfare. New rules coming into force - Jamie and Josh also did it and so we all have our certificates, Abi was not to be out done so she has hers as well - amazing what you can do travelling to the races! The hay fields ( we have 4 this year ) are almost ready to cut - so now it will rain! Our nephew cuts the grass and then comes to bale it whilst Jamie turns it and brings the bales in to wrap in plastic to ferment into Haylage - dust free. Saracen will eventually test it so we know protein levels. Since our change to Saracen feed I cant think we have looked back. Most of our horses are now out at grass - Dotties Promise and Late Night Drama are back in work and head for the 27th August at Hexham so thats the 5 in work - the two flat boys, who are out again next weekend ( Haydock and maybe Redcar ), as is O' Faolains Glory - she goes to Cartmel. Our home bred fillies are registered for the Great British Bonus Scheme which gives a 20K bonus on certain fillies only races and 50% if its a mixed race - hence we are aiming for the race at Hexham with Dotties Promise. Late Night Drama has 50% GBB status - it all makes racing British bred fillies worthwhile! Its the time of year when some horses retire and go out of racing and new ones enter the yard - we have Mr Ramoon ( Samantha ), Ratemenow ( Susan Corbett Racing ) and maybe Jasmin des Blins depending on if he passes the vet tomorrow. Clubs are due for renewal and we have an up dated shares availability attached. Nick is leaving the Northern Racing Club and I want to say thank you to Nick for his support as the club was his brain child two years ago. So with a couple of leavers we have 12% left to sell in Champ Royal - new club starts 1st September..... Racing this week 18th July Clear Angel in the Apprentice Race over 1 mile 19th July Crimson Road Haydock maybe 19th July O Faolains Glory - Cartmel either a big race or a small race! 0 - 130 carrying no weight or 0- 100 with a claimer. 20th July Crimson Road Redcar - maybe Diary Dates 23rs August National Racehorse Week - open to the general public with lots of demos from our vets, chiro, farrier etc. Owners very welcome to help with the day. 10.30 - 3.00 6th September Owners Open Day - with a parade of horses for the season ahead and food a la Steve!
