Newsletter - Susan Corbett's Newsletter November 09, 2025 |
| Hi Susan Corbett's Newsletter It's a fine day for Remembrance Sunday – here in Otterburn at least! One of the horses we bred here, and went on to be trained by Roger Teal when Jane moved house, is Electric Bass – won his photo finish to have the race removed in the stewards room for a ( looked like ) very small bump near the finishing line! Commiserations to Jane and Roger! Sometimes things do seem unfair. However back at base... the Cream Barn is almost finished and Jamie ( helped by Josh ) is looking good – lighter and airy due to modifications by Jamie. The whole week was a build up to Hexham on Friday, where we had 8 runners and pulled in every favour to get the horses to the racecourse! All went smoothly – two disappointments with Dancer not being as positive as I would have liked – he goes again on softer ground - and O'faolains Glory running 'Flat' but she will get a mini break and back to her old self soon – she did finish a little lame so we will see what the Chiro thinks on Tuesday – maybe a pulled muscle. However we then went on to better things with Wee Alki finally breaking into the world of winners! The Naughty But Nice and Ours for Life' Phew ( that's was Janes ideas as well ! ) syndicate, whose principle is to look after their horses after retirement as well as in racing, finally got their winner! Conor rode very well to get Wee Alki over that line – thrilled for both as it's a while since Conor had a winner mainly due to his broken leg in June ( not our fault but riding O Faolains Glory at the time ). Les's Legacy was looking good, leading from the front but ran out of steam before the line to be 6th – then we had the two sets of two! Sunset Hill and Pinot both being tried out over a fence to see a way ahead for the season – both did very well – jumped brilliantly and came home 3rd and 4th to very good horses. Then came the debut for Ratemenow and the Susan Corbett Racing Club – as usual our small yard seems to be overlooked as he set off at 50/1 and came in a very good 3rd behind two Southern horses from Dan Skelton and Henry Daly his horse was 70k. Ivans Legacy was great – getting settled and running from the front – he goes over hurdles next race while Ratemenow will go back to Hexham on the 19th. We had 5/8 in the prize money not bad for a day at Hexham and a lot of work in Progress. Now the horses start to gear up to qualifying for those:- Finals in March with their 40K prize pots 20th March Musselburgh, 21st Kelso and 22nd Carlisle - no one can say I did not give them the dates! To be in the final we have to run 3 times in the North with at least one qualifier and most qualifiers are 0 - 120 tops so we need to get horses qualified asap! We are still top ( I think ) at Hexham but Lucinda is hot on our heels so two more meetings to go.... Thanks to David Thompson who has donated a trophy for the Girsonfield Horse of the Year 2025 – a new award which will be presented at the Christmas party.. Dates 13th Nov – Fairly Fulling at Sedgefield 15th Nov Mr Ramoon has his debut at Wetherby 16th Nov Freddie Steady Go at Cheltenham in a listed Bumper. 19th Nov – all roads lead to Hexham! 5th Dec Christmas Party Phew that's all folks!
