Discover the secrets with this Betting Exchange online tutorial.

This tutorial attempts to pinpoint best practice when using a betting exchange, such as Betfair, to back or lay horses either pre-race or in-running.

You might also use betting bot such as Bet Bot Pro which I can recommend.

The term master class usually refers to instruction conducted live; in this case it is an exchange of views and strategies devised to obtain best possible returns from a proven horse Lay System.

This course has been conducted via a thread hosted by a forum at Sportsbettingtips.com, commencing on the dates shown below. Important lessons as they arose are highlighted in bold.

The main contributors are myself and Phil who has extensive and valuable experience in the use of Betfair. The Lay System used for selections has been devised by me using RaceXpert software.

Hi Phil

Thanks for your post - I'm pleased you enjoy and hopefully profit from the posts. I am thinking of posting selections for a period and including a commentary on the progress made placing the selections on Betfair.

Anyone interested, hopefully you included, will do the same and we can compare the results.

I have come across the idea of increasing stakes after a losing bet. For example a lay selection wins at 2-1. The next 2 selections would have stakes of 2 points instead of 1 point to absorb the loss.

If anyone has any views on this staking plan it would be interesting to hear them.

Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2006 6:52 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

------------------------------------------------------------- So we're off and running to see how the lay system works in practise at Betfair. I have set up an account with £100 bank and I'll have to keep my wits about me as Betfair can bite!

I remember an occasion when Tony (I will NOT be beaten) Mc'Coy was unseated and someone layed him in running to lose at 1000-1 (£2 was matched). Mc'Coy had other ideas, remounted and as the leader fell at the last went on to win. Ouch!

The selections for Thursday 9th Nov

Ludlow 4.0 Lady Roania

Taunton 4.10 Where's My Baby

We'll start with minimum stakes of £2 - price must stay within evens and 13-2. Both look alright on that score.

Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2006 1:22 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Ok Chris lets give it a whirl

Ludlow 4.0 Lady Roania got odds of 3.8

Taunton 4.10 Where's My Baby 5.1

Fingers crossed Phil Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2006 4:24 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ---------------------------------------------------------------- Well not the best of starts with Lady Roania winning that cost me £5.60 However I doubled my stake up to £4 on Where’s My Baby and she duly went missing in the final 2 furlongs to claw back £3.82 after betfair took their commission from me so my bank stands at £98.22 down £1.78 lets hope for better returns on Friday but it was good fun thanks Chris

Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2006 7:15 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

----------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Phil

Yes - pity about Lady Roania and you did well to increase the stakes to keep the loss to a minimum. I was not able to do this and the odds I obtained were similar to yours so my bank was reduced to £96.40.

However 'tis early doors and for Friday 10th Nov we have

Newcastle 2.45 Tartan Classic

Newcastle 3.55 Middleton Dene

Regards Chris

Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2006 7:02 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

Comment: If you have strong reasons to believe a bet will lose it is best to pass on it – there is always another day.

------------------------------------------------------------

Tartan Classic is too big at 12.4 currently and I am concerned about Middleton Dene.

The latter is trained by N G Richards who does well at this course, especially in bumpers. He has a 26% overall strike rate here which ramps up to 60% in National Hunt flat races.

So the percentage call would be to give this one a miss.

...and so it proved, with Middleton Dene winning at 4-1. It's a pity the Lay system came up with this as I would have backed it to win otherwise for the above mentioned reasons. It was one of my Stable Stats selections.

Anyway nobody got their fingers burnt and boy oh boy have we got something to get the juices running tomorrow Saturday 11th Nov. Most courses are represented so here goes:

Cheltenham 3.45 My Will

Kempton 4.20 Rule Of Life

Lingfield 12.05 Sincerely

Uttoxeter 1.20 Kristiansand

Uttoxeter 4.05 Troglodyte

Wetherby 12.40 Snake Rave

Wolverhampton 8.00 Miss Fancy Pants

Phil's in the lead - let's see if I can catch up

Kind regards Chris Posted: Sat Nov 11, 2006 9:08 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ---------------------------------------------------------------

Well that was certainly a helter-skelter ride - typical isn't it?

As soon as you put yourself on the line Fate jumps out from behind a fence and says: "Watch it sonny, don't get ahead of yourself!"

All the favs lost - Rule of Will 8-11, Kristiansand 11-10, Troglodyte 11-2 (5.7 Betfair); Miss Fancy Pants (A sure-fire favourite) 10-11

But guess who wins - My Will 9-2, Sincerely 5-1

Fortunately from my point of view My Will was trading on Betfair at greater than 13-2 this morning so I passed on him.

But just got caught with Sincerely at 5.4 resulting in a loss of £8.80. So with the others all losing I ended up with a loss of just £1.30 leaving me with a balance of £95.10. I hope Phil fared as well.

Sunday’s selections:

Carlisle 2.00 Gratton Lodge

Carlisle 2.30 Clueless

Fontwell 1.15 Idris

This is what the Racing Post has to say about the first two:

Howard Johnson's nine-year-old (Gratton Lodge) spent last season in the wilderness but shaped much more encouragingly behind a progressive sort over C&D after a break last time and should be spot on.

It's hard to know what happened to CLUELESS when sent off long odds-on for his hurdling debut early in the year but he was decent on the Flat and is worth another chance.

Should we be worried?

Betting Exchange online tutorial

Well no, we didn't need to worry as it turned out as Gratton Lodge and Idris lost with Clueless a non runner, leaving us £4 up less 20p commission on Betfair and a total of £98.90.

This is often how we view expectations, far more extreme than is likely. Whether it is how we expect a summer holiday abroad to turn out - constant blue skies, romance, and gorgeous food. Or fearing the worst when the weather forecast is poor or the next train we travel on will have a bomb on it or crash.

So, back to normality and faith in the system restored we boldly go into another week with just the one selection for Monday in:

Leicester 2.10 Pearl King

Hi Chris I do not have access to a pc at the weekend and so missed out on that rollercoaster - fingers crossed I can get back into the black today

Leicester 2.10 Pearl King £4 got on at 2.0 so potential £4 loss or 3.82 profit

Bank £98.22 Guest Posted: Mon Nov 13, 2006 2:22 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

Comment: It is possible to make a profit on Betfair by both backing and laying a horse.

Hi Chris after laying Pear King for £4.00 at 2.00 I noticed that it was really drifting in the market and so backed it to win £2.50 at 2.62. This meant that if it lost I would win £1.50 but if it won I would also make a profit of just 5p.

Unfortunately for you it went on to win as only two other horse managed to get round so bank is at £98.27 5p up on the day and looking forward to Tuesdays excitement Phil Guest Posted: Mon Nov 13, 2006 8:42 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial -----------------------------------------------------------

Hi Guys

Good to see you are still in the hunt and well done Phil for wriggling out of today’s lay with an astute backing gambit.

I was not so fortunate and fell, with a loss of £1.88 leaving my total at £97.02.

Further excitement will need to be reined in until Wednesday as there are no selections for Tuesday.

It was an appropriate time for the Legend in his own lifetime, Desert Orchid to pass away today and I'm sure many racing enthusiasts have fond memories of his gallant career.

Kind Regards

Chris Guest Posted: Mon Nov 13, 2006 9:29 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial -------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Chris, How come you were not using £4 as your stake to recoup your loss? Cheers Phil Posted: Tue Nov 14, 2006 6:07 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial

--------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Phil

The 6 six lays previous to Pearl King's win were all losers

But I ought to double up on the next lay and here they are for Wednesday

Kempton 5.20 Satyricon

Southwell 2.30 Trinity Rose

Southwell 3.30 Jordan's Light

Warwick 12.40 Mr Aitch

Unfortunately I'm not always around to check progress so may miss the times when I should double up

Regards

Chris Posted: Wed Nov 15, 2006 8:15 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ----------------------------------------------------------------

Not much luck today. Started well enough with Mr Aitch 2nd at 5-4, Profit £1.90 but..Trinity Rose won at 4-1 my Betfair odds 3.4 - loss £4.80

Jordan's Light won at 7-4 my Betfair odds 3.3 - loss £4.60

Giving a loss on the day of £7.50 Betfair Total now £89.52

Satyricon was a non runner which meant there was no chance of doubling up to recoup losses.

We need some respite - here are Thursday's selections

Hereford 12.50 Resonance

Market Rasen 2.10 Yaboya

Market Rasen 2.40 Inaro

Wolverhampton 4.20 Rosein

I have just been looking at the results of the lay system going back to 2002. In that time the graph has been steadily gaining points profit and now stands at 312. There are inevitably dips and periods when it does not move forward much. This is then followed by a period of sustained growth.

It also appears possible to improve on the statistics when using the Exchanges as shorter prices than SP (which is what the system results are based on) can be obtained. For example in the short time we have tested it here from 9th Nov - my loss has been 11 points but the system has lost 13 points.

Patience must be our watchword. I'll have another look at the stats to assess the longest losing periods to see what we might be in for.

Regards

Chris

Comment: Don’t be distracted by temporary losses – stick to your guns through a losing run. Just make sure your bank is large enough for your stakes.

Unfortunately missed yesterdays selections as I was away on business however have managed to get on to today’s

Hereford 12:50 Resonance £2 @3.15 lost won £1.91

Yaboya £2 @2.2won lost£2.40

Inaro £2 @6 (currently at 9.0 have to see if it comes in)lost £1.91

A good result and back in the black

Posted: Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:41 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ------------------------------------------------------------- Betting Exchange online tutorial

Yes a better result yesterday and I am up to £92.98 Friday's selections

Ascot 2.45 Briscoe Place

Exeter 2.55 Blandings Castle

Exeter 3.30 Artipreuil

Kelso 12.25 Clueless

Kelso 3.10 Windy Hills

Wolverhampton 4.20 Londolozi

Wolverhampton 5.50 City For Conquest

Some of these may well be too big e.g. Artipreuil although 3 are quite low

Posted: Sat Nov 18, 2006 8:19 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ----------------------------------------------------------------

Only Windy Hills won albeit at 5-1 - however such are the vagaries of using Betfair I failed to get on Artipreuil and Briscoe Place so lost out on gaining from them.

City For Conquest a loser at 8-1 was a non qualifier although you may have been able to get on within the price range max of 13-2 or 7.5 decimal.

So I ended the day at £87.80 - must do better!

Saturday’s selections

The first 2 will be way too big but I'll include them anyway

Ascot 2.35 Potts Of Magic

Haydock 2.50 Forest Green

Huntingdon 12.55 Afrad

Huntingdon 2.30 College Ace

Huntingdon 3.00 Monkerhostin

Wolverhampton 7.30 Peregrine Falcon

Wolverhampton 9.30 Premier Fantasy

Kind Regards Chris

Posted: Sun Nov 19, 2006 1:04 pm Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial ----------------------------------------------------------------

I ignored Potts Of Magic and Forest Green

College Ace won at 3-1 and Peregrine Falcon at 15-8

These results left my Betfair account at £82.80

Sunday’s selections

Plumpton 1.20 Geeveem

Towcester 12.10 Glen Thyne

Regards Chris

Posted: Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:18 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial -----------------------------------------------------------------

Glen Thyne came 2nd to my Stable Stats tip Billy Bray at 33-1, so good result there. Geeveem from the in-form Paul Nicholls yard won at 4-5. My Betfair account now stands at £82.50.

Selections for Monday - reminder, selections must be priced between evens and 13-2.

Ludlow 1.20 Return Home

Ludlow 3.50 Saxon Leader

At time of posting, both these are too big at 7.8 and 14.5 respectively so I will pass today, although they might well shorten later in the day.

Chepstow 1.35 Michael Muck won I lost £7.80

Chepstow 3.20 Master D'Or lost I clawed back £3.82

Wetherby 3.10 Doris's Gift odds were too big best was 7.8 so £3.98 down on the day

Bank stands at £106.72 for me

Chris bank stands at £84.30

Posted: Thu Nov 23, 2006 8:25 am Post subject: Betting Exchange online tutorial --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Such are the vagaries of wagering on Betfair I did not actually get on the winning Michael Muck. I left a price on I considered achievable but failed to check if it had been matched before the off. So I just gained £1.90 on Master D'Or which put me up to £90.20.

I thought Phil would be alright as he usually doubles up after a loser but did not on this occasion. The race would certainly have tested a layers nerves while following the race on betfair in running.

I usually follow a race through the commentary provided by the Betting Zone on the Racing post website but it was not working so watched the odds changing on Betfair and it was neck and neck until the winner asserted near the end.

Comment: If you have left a price unmatched make sure you return to check as you may be in for a disappointment.

Today’s selections

Taunton 12.55 Travolta

Wolv 1.10 Aureate 1st 1-2

Wolv 2.50 Dancing Flame 5th 7-1 non qualifier

This gives us a 1.5 point profit although I was away and not able to lay these, although I'm sure Phil came away smiling.)

My betfair bank is now £95.70 (I went with Joyrider as it was close to being an evens qualifier on Betfair.)

Saturday's selections (NB qualifiers must be evens to 13/2 SP)

Lingfield 1.30 Tee Off

Lingfield 2.35 Baan

Newcastle 12.20 Over The Storm

Towcester 2.50 Riders Revenge

Wolverhampton 7.30 Danebank 3-1

Wolverhampton 8.00 Ama De Casa 9-2

Wolverhampton 9.00 Eccollo fell 1.38

All qualifiers lost giving us plus 4 points - my Betfair bank is now £101.40

Unfairly I stole a march on Phil over the weekend as there were 4 qualifiers for Sunday

Fontwell 12.10 Aristi

Fontwell 1.15 Penzance

Leicester 1.55 Viscount Rossini

Newbury 3.45 Forrest Pennant

All lost but I was only on the last 3 as I did not get to my PC in time for the first. This increased my bank to £107.10

Selections for Monday 27th Nov

Folkestone 1.00 Chamoss Royale

Kempton 1.10 David’s Mark

Kempton 1.10 David’s Mark 4th 10-3

Kempton 1.40 Sriology 5th 9-4

Kempton 2.10 Wood Farm unpl 3-1

Wolverhampton 2.50 Chickado non qualifier 9-1

So plus 3 points which brings our losing run to 16 - not a bad run for our money and long may it continue.

I was not concentrating yesterday and deserve a slap on the wrists for laying Chamoss Royale and losing a £1 of profit.

Comment: make sure you accept the price you require. Take care not to place a bet twice when placing a bet at a better price. You need to ensure you cancelled the original bet – if things go wrong you may find your liabilities are twice what you expected.

This is a good lesson on the importance of not dealing on Betfair in a hurry - take your time and double check that you have made the right decisions.

Despite this my bank increased by £4.70 and stands now at £111.80.

Sorry to hear you've not been well recently, Phil - but what better way than a win on the Exchanges to bring back a little colour!

My odds obtained for Fealeview Lady were 4.5 - do you find that lay odds are best at a particular time of day? If we could pin down a best time, that would help.

I usually get on early in the morning and ask for a price a little below what is available and then (if I remember) check to see later if it has been matched. If not, I then take the current price.

My bank, although closing fast on Phil, is still just behind at £113.70

Hi Chris, I tend to look on Betfair first thing in the morning and see odds, then check it against odds in racing post. If it is less than RP I put the bet on, if not I have another look in 2 hours time and click on the horse to see the trend line for the bets that have been put on in the last two hours.

If the odds are drifting and it is still within our 6.5 limit I put the bet on, if it is going lower I wait till 10 minutes before the off and put it on then.

If it is over 6.5 at the off I try and get it on when it is in running at 6.5 or below which quite often comes in as horses can take the lead early on only to tire towards the end.

Let’s hope for another good day Many thanks for the selections Phil

Hi Phil

Thanks for that very useful information on your approach to laying on Betfair and your points could well be considered best practice. Of course it is not always possible to follow the guidelines for various reasons and we can only adhere to as many as possible.

I fared little better yesterday and ended the day with a loss of £4.36 leaving a bank of £109.34. I did however get on Personal Column as it was very close to evens at the time. I have also done the same with today’s selection accepting 1.96 as I believe it will go over 2.0 by the off.

I also doubled up the stake to £4 after yesterdays loss and duly collected my £3.80 to raise my bank to £113.14.

I was correct in thinking the price would go above evens and it ended at 11-8 SP

The result of Olivair winning at 100-1 is interesting in that everyone assumed his best ground was good or firmer whereas the opposite appears to be the case.

Unlike Phil I did not lay Granit Jack as, apart from being a non qualifier, he was also on my horse to follow list. So I came away with £1.90 and a total bank of £115.04. Perhaps I can catch up with the Saturday's selections while Phil has a lie-in

Kempton 3.45 Lilac Star non qualifier

Kempton 4.20 Last Sovereign lost

Southwell 1.40 Victor Trumper 2nd 5-2

Southwell 2.45 Free Loader non qualifier

Wetherby 12.20 Best Accolade non qualifier

Four wins from four qualifiers - unfortunately I lost my nerve after 3 wins and closed my lay on Last Sovereign as I did not want to lose what I had gained on the first three. So I end the day up £5.70 and my bank has almost caught up with Phil at £120.74

Hi everyone

We're off on a new week in this adventure and we were lucky to consider Sunday a rest day as the lay system produced 2 selections which won - Trigger The Light won 7-2 and Mr Dow Jones won 9-2 - phew!

Selections for Monday

Fakenham 12.50 Chaninbar

Fakenham 1.50 Avalon

Lingfield 1.10 For Life

Lingfield 2.10 All Quiet

Regards Chris

Fakenham 12.50 Chaninbar 3rd 2-5 non qualifier

Fakenham 1.50 Avalon unpl 7-4

Lingfield 1.10 For Life 14-1 non qualifier

Lingfield 2.10 All Quiet 3rd 11-4

Although Chaninbar was a non qualifier I considered his odds way too short - overhyped due to the trainer/jockey combination (Nicholls/Walsh) so his true price should have been evens at least. So I included the horse in my lays.

Be aware of the true reasons for market moves and profit from them by not following the crowd

This resulted in 3 wins, £5.70 and the bank now at £126.44

Ruby Walsh

Selections for Tuesday

Kempton 3.50 Heaven's Walk

Sedgefield 1.50 Greyside

Sedgefield 2.50 Great Approach

Sedgefield 3.20 San Peire

I would be wary of laying Greyside at too big odds as I think he has a fair chance - there may be an opportunity to back and lay to produce a profit whatever the outcome. If Phil is back he could be our man to achieve this.

Kempton 3.50 Heaven's Walk lost

Sedgefield 1.50 Greyside non qualifier lost

Sedgefield 2.50 Great Approach lost

Sedgefield 3.20 San Peire lost

3 points up

My bank increased by £5.70 to £132.14 - we seem to have lost Phil for the moment, let's hope he comes back.

We will have to start tweaking the staking system soon to accelerate profits. Any ideas anyone?

Selections for Wednesday

Hexham 12.20 Acropolis

Kempton 1.40 Bollywood

Leicester 1.00 Bob Hall

Wolverhampton 6.20 Sarwin

Hi Phil, sorry to hear about your wife and I hope she soon recovers.

Hexham 12.20 Acropolis 4th 6-4

Kempton 1.40 Bollywood non qualifier

Leicester 1.00 Bob Hall won 6-4

Wolverhampton 6.20 Sarwin 2nd 5-2

Betfair was out of operation until 1pm so I missed out on races prior to, that so ended up only laying Sarwin. There was quite a lot of market support for Sarwin but I resisted the temptation to interfere and was duly rewarded. So up £1.90 and Bank at £134.04.

Selections for Thursday

Taunton 12.50 In His Dreams

Wolverhampton 6.20 Writ

Taunton 12.50 In His Dreams 3rd 7-2

Wolverhampton 6.20 Writ 5th 13-8

Good day today - 2 points up and bank now £137.84

Friday's selections

Kempton 5.50 Sincerely

Wolverhampton 1.35 Bold Indian

Wolverhampton 2.45 Gifted Lass

Some big prices here so care needed to watch the market. I have put in offers of Sincerely 5.2 and Gifted Lass 6.4.

I have also a matched lay on Bold Indian at 1.82 as I think the price will rise to evens.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kempton 5.50 Sincerely 3rd 7-2

Wolverhampton 1.35 Bold Indian 2nd 10-11 non qualifier

Wolverhampton 2.45 Gifted Lass 1st 7-2

Bold Indian did not quite make evens but I left my lay on. also for some reason my lay of Gifted Lass was not matched so I did not lose anything there. This resulted in a profit of £3.80 and the bank now stands at £141.64. Phil will have some work to do when he comes back.

One way to speed up returns is to increase the stakes and I think we will add an extra 50p when the bank reaches £150.

Selections for Saturday

Market Rasen 1.50 Stan

Southwell 12.00 Mardi

Wolverhampton 4.00 Milson's Point

Wolverhampton 4.30 Foreign Language

Wolverhampton 5.00 Champagne Shadow

Market Rasen 1.50 Stan 7-4 Pulled Up

Southwell 12.00 Mardi 1st 9-4

Wolverhampton 4.00 Milson's Point 1st 3-1

Wolverhampton 4.30 Foreign Language 2nd 10-11 non qualifier

Wolverhampton 5.00 Champagne Shadow 3rd 4-1

Strictly speaking this was a losing day but somehow I managed to add £1.04 to the bank giving £142.68.

I lost £4.66 on Mardi with matched odds of 3.33, but unmatched on Milson's Point with requested odds of 4.0. This meant I had 3 winners giving £5.70. Am I just lucky?

Just 2 selections for Monday

Ayr 12.50 Echo Point

Plumpton 2.45 The Hardy Boy

Echo Point is likely to remain odds on and I have taken a position of 5.5 for Hardy Boy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ayr 12.50 Echo Point non runner

Plumpton 2.45 The Hardy Boy won 4-1

My 5.5 was unmatched when I checked back around lunchtime and as the price had widened to around 7 at that point I cancelled the bet. So bank remains the same.

There is nothing worse than leaving a bet unmatched until it goes into in-play and then having the bet matched when the outcome is beyond doubt. If you are not going to be around for the off then cancel any unmatched bets. Applies only to win bets as unmatched lay bets are canceled at the off.

Selection for Tuesday

Sedgefield 3.20 Lina Gram

Lina Gram 3rd 11-2

I was unable to lay Lina Gram as I had to get to Somerset early to attend a public enquiry. Somerset CC were trying to evict my scout from her smallholding near Yeovil and I went to lend her my support. We await the verdict but it is an usettling time for her.

I will have to conclude this thread at Christmas but at the rate the bank is growing (£142.6 I'll be able to retire on the Betfair profits!

Selections for Wednesday

Newbury 12.15 Marodima

Newbury 2.25 Wild Is The Wind

Newbury 3.20 Adoraballa

Currently the 1st 2 are above 8.0 - I have requested 6.6 and 6.2 respectively. Adorabella (I adore that name) is 4.9 and I have requested 3.8 and I will check back at lunchtime.

Newbury 12.15 Marodima

Newbury 2.25 Wild Is The Wind

Newbury 3.20 Adoraballa

All lost, including the adorable Adorabella. Her price stayed big and I had to accept 5.3 until she shortened nearer the off to around 4.

I managed to get the requested odds on the others resulting in a profit of £5.70, so my bank marches on to £148.30 and near the trigger where we can up the stakes.

Exeter 1.10 Out The Black (5.6)

Southwell 1.00 Georges Flyer (7.0)

Southwell 2.30 Flyingit (1.8 )

Wolverhampton 4.50 Hollywood George (7.2)

I have requested at Betfair the odds in brackets. Although I doubt Hollywood George will be matched as the odds currently are 9.8.

The only winner was Flyingit which cost me £1.60. Georges Flyer went unmatched leaving me a profit of £4.10 and my bank at £152.40.

Tis time to up the ante and increase our stakes to £2.50. If I were a betting man I would wager that today will be a losing one!

The selections for Friday

Ascot 12.55 Barbers Shop (3.0)

Ascot 3.40 Nobel (7.6)

Uttoxeter 3.30 Iris's Flyer (5.3)

Requested odds at Betfair in brackets

.... and so it proved - it must be a sixth sense bred in to the punter down the years, when a betting day comes and you know in your bones it's going to be a losing one.

I think it's all down to the odds, when after a good run you decide on something different (in this case upping the stakes). You could almost catch a glimpse of Lady Luck waiting in the wings - but today she's in a foul mood.

Barbers Shop trimmed our wings but the odds were moderate at 1.38, although I was matched early doors at 3.0 giving a loss of £5.0 and the bank down to £147.40.

The other 2 selections never came in enough and ended up non qualifiers, though Nobel did well to come 2nd, trading at 40.0 early morning and ending at 8-1 SP.

However a storm is quickly past and Saturdays selections look promising. Phil, I'm sure will agree to doubling our stakes after a loss, so we will have £4 (we are under £150 again) on the first.

Newbury 12.15 Spare Me

Haydock 2.05 Jazz D'Estruval

Newbury 12.15 Spare Me 2nd 5-2

Haydock 2.05 Jazz D'Estruval 3rd 6-4

A satisfactory end to the week - doubling our stakes to £4 on Spare Me and £2 on Jazz D'Estruval produced £5.70 and the bank up to £153.10.

You will never believe what I did today! I made a serious error on Betfair and believe me it's not difficult to do if you're in a hurry.

I was working on the not unreasonable assumption that Paul Nicholls would bag a winner today at Taunton. He fielded 3 runners:

1.05 The Luder

1.40 Oslot

2.10 Petit Lord

My plan was to back each one, increasing the odds each time, until the winner came up. So I kicked off with The Luder, didn't follow the race, but came back to check on Betfair and saw my account showed a win.

I thought I would just check Racingpost's Betting site to see how the race panned out only to discover that The Luder was nowhere and Il Duce had won.

Musht be some mishtake (no actually I hadn't been drinking) and on returning to my Betfair account discovered that I had actually hit the lay button in error. Phew! This one turned out in my favour but imagine how I would feel if The Luder had won.

Anyway, as I had now made my profit (albeit a reduced one) I decided against continuing my plan and consequently forfeited the win on Oslot! Doh!

It's amazing how the ups and downs of a day's punting influence your decisions for better or for worse (and usually for worse) - The Psycholgy of Punting - now there's a fine title for a book.

Enough of these musings; "up, up and on,on" : quoth he.

Hi Chris, I had a substantial bet on laying Crewe yesterday in the Tranmere v Crewe game and logged on today to hopefully find my bet voided as the match was cancelled due to fog. What I did not realise was that under betfair rules if this happends you have to wait 3 days to see if the match is replayed in this time period before you can get your stake back. Quite frustrating really not much happening on betfair at the moment will have a look a bit nearer the off

I also got caught with Danehillsundancer and as I had increased stakes to £2.50 the loss was £8 reducing my bank to £145.10. So it is a bit like snakes and ladders at the moment.

Hi Phil, thanks for writing that up

I failed to get on Farmers Lad at 5.6 so missed out there. Wolverhampton was abandoned before Bond Playboy could run.

NB If a lay bet is unmatched at the off it is lapsed, whereas all unmatched back bets will remain valid in running.

Also I forgot to double up after loss so just returned with £1.90 on Rockys Girl. Leaving bank at £147.00.

Interestingly Tora Petcha won at 10-1 and Hereford Boy at 8-1

Friday's selections

Hereford 2.00 Natoumba

Kempton 3.55 Jennverse

Lingfield 12.40 Tilapia

Lingfield 3.40 Ciccone

These are the penultimate selections as I will not be posting after Christmas. However you can continue to get them by signing up for Racexpert at www.horse4course-racetips.com and I will then send you the system free of charge.

Kempton 3.55 Jennverse race abandoned

Lingfield 12.40 Tilapia 2nd 9-2

Lingfield 3.40 Ciccone 6th 7-2

Two more wins to end on (no selections for Saturday) giving a profit of £3.80 and final bank at £150.80, demonstrating, with Phil who bravely came along for the ride, that we can make a profit laying on Betfair with care and patience.
