Lucky Streak Ends Poorly!

By Steve Arthur

In the 1980’s, I was part of a group, that used computers to produce winning odds and collect millions in sports wagers from Las Vegas Casinos. Our syndicate betting pool was in the millions of dollars and we wagered an average of £40,000 on each game.

Dave Larson, who was one of our runners, placed our bets in casinos Sports Books like Caesars Palace and the Hilton Super book. Dave, was in his middle 70’s, had worked at the Golden Nugget Sports book and was well know around town.

He was a great personality, and very well liked by everybody on each side of the counter. People were always interested in his bets, as his average wager was £40,000 and we were absolutely killing the bookies.

The Local Newspaper was running a weekly football handicapping contest, where you had to pick 20 games each week against the printed point spread. You needed to pick both college and NFL selections each week. It was just a simple contest to promote their small circulation. Whoever selected the most winners each week, against the betting line won the weekly prize of £75. There was no entry fee, you just check off your selections, and post them to the newspaper.

In the middle of carrying around hundreds of thousands of pounds, and placing bets for our syndicate, he would pass his time by reading the paper. Every week he would select his 20 games, and post them.

In week 10, he ran the board, going an unbelievable 20 - 0. Maybe you just fell off your chair, so I’ll say it again….He picked twenty straight winners. The odds of that are over a million to one. (Exactly 1,048,755 to 1)

His name was published in the paper for all too see. He got a lot of ribbing from the regular punters around town, for collecting £75 on winning odds of a million to one. Here was a guy carrying around hundreds of thousands of pounds, and he wins £75 on this huge long shot.

He came into the office later in the week and told me he stopped by the Newspaper to collect his £75 cheque. He was laughing when he reached my desk. Dave was giggling: “Do you know what the guys at the newspaper asked me?” He kept laughing. “They seriously wanted to know what I was going to do with the money.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Steve was part of the Computer Group, who had a betting pool of over $40 million dollars and beat Las Vegas in the 1980's.

Later, some of the programmers attacked horse racing in Hong Kong where the stakes and profits were even greater.

He is now retired, and offers his resources to others who share the dream of. "Winning odds at the Races"
