Your ultimate guide to Towcester Racetrack...

Principal Towcester Facts, Figures and Top Trends.

The most prestigious Chase held at the course is the Ladbrokes Mobile Masters Handicap Chase (Handicap) Grade 3 which takes place every year in January and the 2011 renewal is won by Flying Horse trained by Milton Harris with prize money of £6,505.

While the principal Hurdle is the Ladbrokes.com Handicap Hurdle run in 2011 on 10 January won by Warne's Way and trained by Brendan Powell worth £4,554 in prize money.

The racecourse is unique among UK tracks in that there is no entry charge so a free day at the races and free parking is a welcome advantage,(until Easter Sunday; excludes Boxing Day).

The track has recently undergone a £7.5 million upgrade and affords stunning views over the parkland and Northamptonshire countryside. It is a popular track amongst racegoers for its sharp turns and uphill finish which can sometimes result in unexpected winners.

The racecourse was created in 1928 on the Easton Neston estate owned by Lord Hesketh who retained ownership of the course after the rest of the state was sold to a russian businessman in 2004.

The town has other connections with sport notably the Silverstone motor racing track which stages the British Grand Prix. It is also the home of the Towcestrians Rugby Football Club, founded in 1933.

An interesting literary association is the mention in Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers of the 'Saracen's Head Inn' in Towcester.
