There are many reasons why horses lose their races and the most obvious is that usually there is always a horse that is capable of winning on his day. So we need to analyse a race from the viewpoint, not of whether the favourite can win, but whether another horse can beat it. As a general rule only 30% of favourites win their races. Couple this with the fact that in pure numerical terms in a ten runner race for example, there is only a 1 in ten chance of winning. Now let us look at the numerous reasons why a favourite might not win its race. 1. The going is not ideal - some horses race best on ground that suits their running style. For example a horse that lifts its hooves up high will usually do best on soft going and possibly the all weather tracks. Horses that appear to glide over the ground will prefer good or firm going as their hooves are not going to sink into the surface. 2. The course is not ideal - most horses have a predilection for a certain type of course. The type of course they prefer is often highlighted by their results. Some are nippy types and prefer a tight course such as Chester. Others may be out and out gallopers and will prefer a course such as Aintree. While some horses prefer to run on all weather surfaces such as fibresand or polytrack. 3. The trip is not ideal - horses are like human athletes as some are muscle bound sprinters, some lithe and lean long distance runners and most are probably somewhere in between. Although it is true for most horses that they become better at longer distances as they age. This explains why there are a much larger percentage of older horses in jumps races of 3 miles and further. Add in a plethora of further reasons which might affect a horse's performance on the day eg Doesn't travel well, prefer different seasons, prefer small or large fields of runners, mares very often do well when in foal and you begin to see it is a wonder that horses perform as consistently as they do. The task of laying horses to lose is made considerably easier with so much racing information now available online. So how do I assess the significance of all these various factors?
Let's take a look at my lay selections for 2 days in April 2008
Plumpton 4.50 Croc An Oir Lost at SP (Starting Price) of 7-1 - Positive: His previous 3rd encouraged the market to consider him an improver Negative; Proving hard to win with Pontefract 2.10 Transcental Lost at 100-30 SP Favourite Positive: Her previous 3rd encouraged the market to consider this valuable experience in a field of unraced maidens Negative: Never underestimate the opposition in maiden races as so little is known about the runners. Pontefract 2.40 Al Azy Lost at 11-2 SP Positive: Previous 3rd was encouraging Negative: But failed to get the trip last time and this was the same distance Pontefract 4.10 Adab Lost as 2-1 Favourite Positive: Fair 3rd last time out Negative: Different type of course - the one galloping and the other tight Sedgefield 8.10 Blue Acre Lost at 3-1 Positive: Previous 4th in a NHF was an encouraging start to racing career Negative: Trip was slightly further and the ground was firmer Windsor 6.55 Katimont Won 5-2 favourite Positive: A fair 4th in previous Class 3 race and this was a drop down to Class 5 Negative: NOt run on good ground to date and as it turned out it suited the horse Bath 6.45 Sugar Ray Won evens favourite Positive: A fair 3rd in previous Class 2 race and this was a drop down to Class 4 Negative: Not run for 196 days so not sure what to expect Bath 7.15 Danski Lost at 5-1 favourite Positive: Previous 4th was a fair run Negative: Race was on all weather at Kempton not turf as at Bath Folkestone 2.15 Oarsman Lost 5-6 favourite Positive: Ran well on all weather and the 3rd on turf last timeNegative: Unproven on turf and at the course Kempton 3.00 Greylami Lost at 7-2 favourite Positive: Last time out 4th followed on a win at Kempton Negative: Up in grade Punchestown 2.30 Money Point Lost at 11-2 when falling at the last in 2nd place Positive: Ran well to finish 3rd on first run on soft ground with a slight mistake costing a place at the last fence Negative: Relative inexperience and potentially prone to the odd mistake Southwell 2.05 Director's Chair Lost at 7-2 Positive: 3rd in 6 runner race at this course previously Negative: Stepped up in trip and just failed to see it out Southwell 2.40 Shot To Fame Lost at 11-4 favourite Positive: 4th in 6 runner race on turf Negative: Down in trip and on the a.w. Southwell 4.25 Graylyn Ruby Lost at 9-2 favourite Positive: Tried this trip for the first time when 3rd at this venue last time Negative: Same track and trip but stiffer competition Towcester 6.30 Romany Dream Lost at 13-2 Positive: Ran well previously to come 3rd in a trip well short of his best Negative: Still short of his best trip here What we can see from these selections is that most are poor value and as such are ideal Laying horses. They are favourites for the wrong reasons, namely their position last time out and this is what gives us the edge. They are often backed into favouritism because of what they achieved last time out rather than on their true merits. In these cases laying horses to lose will turn a profit over time. Unusually, market sentiment in these cases has given us an edge. And over time more will lose than their price suggests they should. "This is all well and good", I hear you say, "but this analysis for laying horses takes a lot of time even if I was any good laying horses". Agreed, but there is a way round it because someone has already done the work for us. "Oh yes"' you will chime in "and these people are going to give this information away from free?" Well actually, yes they are. But before I reveal how you can easily obtain this information let me show you some of the results - all proofed at Tipping League. Prices are Betfair prices with 5% commission factored in.NB The tipster name is horse4course-racetips (Laying horse selections only)
